Our History Runs Deep!
My name is Jeff, and I am a 3rd generation locksmith. I moved to Wisconsin from St. Paul, MN back in 2002, settling into Grantsburg and eventually calling Siren home in 2008. I am a volunteer fire fighter with the Siren Fire Department where I have been for almost 15 years. I have been running my business here for 22 years, but that is not where it all started.
In 1915, my grandfather, William Kline, began what would become our family business. He began hopping railcars, going town to town, and checking in with the local sheriff. Word spread fast that he was in town and soon the town’s people would start showing up to have keys made. By 1922, he settled down into a corner of a storefront in downtown St. Paul, MN on Wabasha Street. He shared this space with the local tailor, shoe and hat shops, and the shoeshiner (or bootblack as they were called back then). He moved to various locations on Wabasha Street over the years until his passing in 1955.
In 1955, my father, Roger Kline, took over the family business. He remained in the downtown area until the early 70s, when he moved the store to the Midway area in St. Paul on University Ave. That is where my story begins. I was born in 1966 and for as long as I can remember I was in the shop with my dad every day learning the trade. I became quite skilled at a very young age and by age 10 my mother, Ruth, took me on my first service call to make keys to a car. We eventually, in the mid 80s, moved to a storefront a few blocks away on Snelling Ave where we remained until 2002 when we closed the storefront and started doing only mobile work. That is when I decided to move to Wisconsin to continue the family business.
Over the years I have tried other things but always gravitated back to where my true passion was, locksmithing. Locksmithing is an ever changing and growing profession, for which I am always learning and updating equipment to keep up with the times. So much has changed in the 109 years that my family has been in this business, and I welcome that every day. I enjoy serving my community in every and any way I can.
